What does the work reveal about your judgment?

A creative-direction portfolio should make your role understandable within the finished work. Show the brief you were answering, the idea you developed and the choices you directed. A campaign image alone may not explain whether you set the direction, designed a component or supported production.

  • Describe the audience, brief and central idea in ordinary language.
  • Show an edit, reference, experiment or decision that explains the direction.
  • Credit the collaborators and identify exactly what you contributed.

Curate for the audience without hiding the process

UAL’s professional portfolio guidance favors a selective body of work, meaningful descriptions and presentation adapted to the employer or client. Its printed-portfolio advice includes process samples. Choose the material that helps this reader understand your practice, rather than treating every application as the same edit.

Requirements differ. The Royal College of Art’s admissions guidance, for example, asks different schools for different balances of finished work and work in progress. That is a useful reminder to check the actual brief; admissions advice is not a universal hiring rule.

Separate the creative result from the business result

You can explain what was made and how you directed it even when you cannot substantiate a sales or awareness claim. If performance evidence is available and shareable, state its source, period and limitations. Otherwise describe the deliverable and the decisions you can support.

Jules’s fictional Eigenstory example explores expressive portfolio directions and a career document. The campaign material demonstrates a presentation approach; it is not a paid client case study or a verified commercial outcome.
